Deitch Projects (18 Wooster Street) has a new Kenny Scharf show called "Inner and Outer Space" on view from October 21 to December 22. Look for new paintings and assemblage works using discarded plastic objects, TV backs etc. Scharf is currently based in LA, but is in NYC for the MoMA Club 57 exhibition opening on October 31.

Jonathan LeVine Projects is pleased to present Made To Stay, a solo exhibition of new work by Dutch artist Eric Basstein in what will be his debut solo show at the gallery.
“One of the biggest challenges facing a painter and his paintings is the test of time. Does it last, will it leave a mark, is it made to stay or will it fade away?” –Eric Basstein
Basstein’s paintings blend contemporary and historical references to create bold compositions that transcend figuration. Anthropomorphic silhouettes, which for this new body of work are taken from stills of ice hockey players, are overflowing with pop culture iconography, creating a collage-like composition that blur the line of abstraction.
Basstein is fascinated by the parallels between art and music, influenced by the likes of Velasquez, Caravaggio and Francis Bacon, as well as hip-hop by A Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom and Madlib. Similar to the way modern music is created by combining samples, paintings are constructed by building layers of imagery. Basstein’s process mimics this approach by appropriating and merging imagery from fashion magazines with comic illustrations and subjects from classical paintings. The end result is a graphic fusion of elements that play with perspective and society’s connection to popular culture.

Bushwick all weekend...
Bushwick Open Studios (BOS) is an arts and culture festival hosted by the volunteer-run organization Arts in Bushwick. Most studios are open 11am – 7pm on Saturday and Sunday of the festival with opening night festivities on Friday night.
This celebration of our neighborhood’s vibrant community and local art scene is free and open to the public. Open studios hours vary per artist, so check our events calendar for precise locations and times.
BOS has been running since 2006 and is New York’s largest open studios event, encouraging thousands of Bushwick-based artists to open their doors and share their work. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a series of events, performances, and panels, coordinated by AiB.

Free and open to the public, the NY Art Book Fair is the world’s premier event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines.
The 2017 NY Art Book Fair will feature over 370 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions and independent publishers from twenty-eight countries.
Join us on Thursday, September 21 from 6 to 9 pm, at MoMA PS1 for our opening night preview. The evening will feature special live performances on the steps of PS1 by Upstate Music, BLONDES and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip).
Entry to the Preview will cost $10, proceeds going to support NYABF17. The first 2,000 visitors to pre-pay online or to pay at the door (while supplies last) will receive a Ticket Edition by Emma Kohlmann.
Entry may be paid at the door or booked online at www.printedmatter.org until 12 noon on September 21st, 2017. If purchased online, you’ll receive your Ticket Edition when checking in at the Preview.
This year’s NY Art Book Fair will included an ever-growing variety of exhibitors – from the zinesters in (XE)ROX & PAPER + SCISSORS and the Small Press Dome representing publishing at its most innovative and affordable, to rare and antiquarian dealers offering out-of-print books and ephemera from art and artist book history, plus the NYABF-classic Friendly Fire, focused on the intersections of art and activism.
NYABF17 will host an array of programming and special events, including: The Classroom, a curated engagement of informal conversations, workshops, readings, and other artist-led interventions, for the eighth year running, as well as The Contemporary Artists’ Book Conference (CABC), in its tenth year, featuring two full days on emerging practices and issues within art-book culture.

'Chromatose'

Chesterfield Gallery is pleased to announce Chromatose, JM Rizzi’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Chromatose assembles a wide array of Rizzi’s recent work, from paintings to works on panel and sculpture.
Anchored by a mural of bright colors on the gallery’s back wall, a natural outlet for Rizzi’s gestural form of expression, the exhibition demonstrates his fluidity of genre. His recent body of work explores painting techniques that he has developed over the past decade, while expanding his ideas into wall hanging cut outs and a large scale arch made of aluminum and acrylic, which allows for his work to interact with light and create an entirely new composition on the floor.
A native of New York City, Rizzi originally began his artistic endeavors at a young age through graffiti and painting on the streets. While he identifies as an abstract painter, he has gained notoriety throughout the street art community with his murals and public commissions throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Inspired by painters from Abstract Expressionism such as Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Bradley Walker Tomlin, JM Rizzi also learned from the Automatic painting techniques of French artist André Masson. He most likens his paintings to jazz music, comparing the base color to the consistent walking bass line, with smaller sections acting as saxophone riffs, highlighting their distinct flavors.
In 2017, JM Rizzi recently completed two murals in Rockefeller Center in New York, and a 7,650 square-foot mural in Boras, Sweden.

Wastedland 2 is a detritus-strewn, site-specific, immersive film installation transforming spaces into a three-dimensional post-apocalyptic graffiti wonderland. Questions of fate and self will collide with graffiti folk lore through wordplay, sculpture, artifacts, and characters – all centered around thematics from the existential fantasy film of the same name. Created by Andrew H. Shirley, and his actors and members of the notorious Brooklyn-based 907 graffiti crew – this environment allows the viewer to enter the psychology of the narrative, to identify and ultimately re-define the way one traditionally engages with film and artwork.
